This spring the team at Martinheiras will hold an off-site retreat at Vila Dos Castanheiros.

If it is peace and quiet you are looking for, then this is the place for you. The area and its uniqueness separate it from the usual retreats you see currently out on the market. Our retreats are authentic and designed to make you walk away feeling fantastic and revived!
The main teaching methods are the Ashtanga Vinyasa system with attention towards alignment, which anyone can do, and is taught in a way to empower you into self practice. However, because we are boutique and small, we access your body, your level and anatomically what works for you, so sometimes a Hatha method will be taught. The focus is on how to use yoga asana as a tool to guide you at whatever stage you are at in your life or whatever injury you are recovering from. The pranayama method is traditional as taught by Sri O.P Tiwari of the Pranayama Institute in Lonavla India. Amari (Tiana) has spent time studying with this great master and so the teachings are authentic and traditional.
For those that want to replace the city stress with the calmness of the countryside, Vila dos Castanheiros (Chestnut Tree Villa) is a great place for this type of retreat. Located in the center of Portugal, in the historical village of Paio Mendes, 3 Km away from Dornes, where the peaceful flow of Rio Zêzere meets the lagoon of Castelo do Bode, you may take advantage of a magnificent landscape, where the mountainside of Ribatejo begins. The family of Vila dos Castanheiros are good friends of ours and have a beautiful place that is able to accommodate more people than our usual retreats. It is for this reason that we have decided to do one of our retreats there.
All of our retreats have a great emphasis on food. In this retreat, Shivam will not only make beautiful, healthy food, smoothies and detox juices, but he will also guide you in two cooking classes. These classes will allow you to go home and make great simple food. We use the freshest, seasonal ingredients, with a range of flavours and colour.
About Your Hosts:
Born and raised in Hong Kong and Indian by origin, Amari (Tiana) started practicing yoga from a young age following the spiritual teachings of Sri Swami Satchidananda with whom her family has been affiliated with since the 1950’s. Prior to teaching yoga, Amari worked in the corporate world for 11 years.
She began her Ashtanga Vinyasa practice (as taught by Sri K Patthabi Jois) under the inspiration and guidance of her primary teacher, Paul Dallaghan. She has also spent time in Mysore practicing at the source with the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Rangaswamy.
In 2005, she received her Teacher Training from Centered Yoga and it was during this time, where she was introduced by Paul to Sri O. P. Tiwari, a pranayama master in the tradition of Swami Kuvalayananda, the honored teacher, and founder of the Kaivalyadhama Institute, Lonavla, India. She has also taken advanced training with Tiwariji in pranayama and study of the ancient texts of Hatha yoga.
She has taught all over the world - Hong Kong, Thailand, London, India, Portugal and China. She continues to travel and teach but remains based in Portugal where she runs her retreat and wellness centre together with Shivam, at "Martinheiras" www.martinheiras.com It is also here that she remained to be in the presence of her current Master Sri Mooji Baba.
She is AUTHORIZED to teach by The Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (KPJAYI). She is also an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 500) with Yoga Alliance International.
Shivam was born in Portugal and since a young age had a keen interest in martial arts, eastern philosophy and spirituality.At the age of 22 went to Japan for 3 months for an Aikido internship. As well as acquiring a black belt, he returned with an immense interest and love for Japanese food.
After this time in Japan he began to work with Japanese food in England and later in Lisbon. It was also in Lisbon where he began to learn yoga in the early 2000’s.
With an immense urge to travel and see the world he spent a significant amount of time in India and Southeast Asia learning from Sharath Rangaswamy and BNS Iyengar.
Today he feels immense gratitude to the guidance of his yoga teacher Carlos Rui Ferreira and Mooji Ji for showing him his pure reflection that has always been Free.
Shivam has worked in London, Hong Kong, Greece and Italy but he is currently based in Portugal where he runs his retreat and wellness centre together with Amari at "Martinheiras"
